How do I change the default Joomla email settings?
Many times you might need to change your Joomla email settings to properly configure communication with your server, configure mass mailing campaigns or just improve the way your emails are arriving in the client’s email accounts. Changing the Joomla email settings usually requires an intimate knowledge of the mail server, the operating system you’re running and of course, the Joomla CMS.
Verifying the Core Joomla Global Configuration Email Settings
The first step in changing the original Joomla email settings is to locate and open the Joomla Global Configuration. Make sure you are logging as an administrator and look for the right menu.
Search for the Server tab. The second sub-category is Mail Settings. Here you can verify the Mailer parameters. You can check the Mailer, SMTP Authentication, SMTP Security, SMTP Port, SMTP Username and SMTP Password. Make sure that they are properly configured for your needs.
Using SMTP to Configure Joomla Email Settings
If your installation uses SMTP to send outgoing mail, you can manage the settings from the Global Configuration as described in the former section. Take in consideration that it is more practical to use an external SMTP server to send emails than to use the localhost because this way your emails are less likely to be categorized as SPAM.
We suggest you to consider the use of a third-party service such as Google Apps, AOL or Yahoo. Alternatively, you can host and manage your own mailing server. Any of the two methods requires some extensive knowledge and technical skill.
Using a Plugin For Your Joomla Email Settings
If you don’t have knowledge about mail server you can choose a plugin to handle your mail settings. At the Joomla Extensions Directory you can find a lot of plugins that can handle Joomla email sending like Advanced Mailer, Clever Mailer and SMTP Pro.
Many of these plugins allow you to send emails through a variety of services such as SendGrid, SendPulse and Gmail. Just install, configure with your email and you’re done.
